Simple Request For Proposal
Dear Community Partners,
We need you to help us make a difference in South Salem this October. South Salem Connect is a Community Progress Team & a Neighborhood Partnership Program. In operation since 1997, seeking to support families and improve neighborhood livability. South Salem Connect brings together individuals and organizations that support and/or provide services to children, families & residence to create a healthier and safer community in the South Salem High School Salem
Our GOALS for your reference:
- Support safe environments, educational opportunities & the development of fundamental skills for children, families and all
- Expand community involvement to improve livability of South Salem Neighborhoods.
Required Proposal Format:
- A general description of your event, program or service.
- What age group(s) are you serving?
- What are your objectives?
What will you be able to accomplish with SSC funds that wouldn’t otherwise be possible?
- What outcomes are you measuring?
- How and when will you report back to us that your objectives were met?
Assumptions and Agreements
- Proposal must be submitted before September 19th 2012
- The project must be completed in October
- A follow-up Leverage Report must be submitted to SSC
- We desire you to make every effort to send a representative to our November 21st meeting. Wednesday 11:30am to 1:00pm location TBA

Salem to Host League of Oregon Cities Events
Salem, Ore. – The City of Salem is hosting the League of Oregon Cities 87th Annual Conference, Thurs., Sept. 27 – Sat., Sept. 29, 2012, at the Salem Conference Center. 600 conference attendees and their guests, from cities all over Oregon, will be in attendance.
“We are delighted to welcome the League of Oregon Cities Annual Conference back to Salem. The conference will provide a wide range of training and networking opportunities for both elected officials and city staff from all over the state. We encourage attendees and guests to experience all that Salem has to offer. Our many shopping, dining/ entertainment and recreational sites are rolling out the red carpet for our visitors,” said Salem Mayor Anna Peterson.
In addition to training for the attendees at the Conference Center, the City of Salem has partnered with area artists, businesses, and organizations to create a special evening event in downtown Salem on Fri., Sept. 28, from 5 – 9 p.m. The Meet the Artists Tour is open to Conference attendees and the general public and will feature artists, galleries, wine tasting, photo exhibits, and live music in downtown Salem.
The Meet the Artists Tour will include: Salem Conference Center Art Gallery & Sculpture Garden, Red Raven Gallery, Elsinore Framing & Fine Art Gallery, Roger Yost Gallery, NW Comic Gallery, Mary Lou Zeek Gallery, Reed Opera House – World Beat Gallery, and Clockworks Café & Cultural Center. In addition to galleries, other displays will be featured on Liberty and Ferry Streets (including window and sidewalk displays). Participating downtown businesses will be staying open extended hours.

The Urban Development Department administers and oversees a variety of programs and services aimed at strengthening Salem's economy including Salem's eight urban renewal areas. In addition, the Department provides loans and grants to finance activities that create emergency, transitional and permanent affordable rental housing for low and moderate income families in Salem and Keizer; allocates funds to non-profits to provide emergency services to homeless and families at-risk of being homeless; facilitates economic opportunities and reinvestment; invests in economic empowerment for individual prosperity and small business growth; issues commercial loan and grant programs; performs real property management, acquisition, sales and leasing services for the City; manages downtown parking services and revitalization; manages Salem's Municipal Airport; and functions as the liaison to community organizations, businesses, and City Council and Agency Board appointed advisory groups.
Friends of Secor Park - Park Cleanup
Friends of Secor Park
Salem, OR – Join Salem’s Parks Department, the Marion Soil and Water Conservation District, and Marion County Weed Control District for a project at Secor Park.
When: Saturdays, October 13th, 20th and 27th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Secor Park.
Where: 5453 Liberty Road South – connected to Crossler Middle School.
Secor Neighborhood Park, with its rolling meadows, and mature-growth trees, is a piece of nature in the city. However, the dirt trails are narrow and need to be cleaned up, and the forested area is becoming overrun with English ivy, Himalayan blackberries and Shiny geranium. We are asking the community to come together to improve this public land by re-establishing the trails system and removing noxious weeds from the forest and creek.
Participants should wear sturdy shoes and clothes for working outside. If the weather is wet, rain gear is helpful. Tools will be provided at check-in, and volunteers will receive instructions on removal techniques and safety procedures.

Oregon Homeowner's Support
Do you know someone who has been affected by the current housing crisis? Many homeowners still don’t know where to turn for help. You can help NEDCO and the State of Oregon change that!
The state is launching a new one-stop website (not live until 9/17/12), and has doubled the number of foreclosure counselors across the state – to help homeowners understand their options and get support moving forward.
A statewide outreach campaign will begin September 17th, with the biggest push during the next two weeks – and your help is needed:
· Host a NEDCO counselor to speak to your agency (staff or clients), civic organization, faith group, etc (5 min to 45 min – whatever works best)
· Put a story or ad in your newsletter or bulletin (NEDCO can email you the finished copy!)
· Put a link to www.oregonhomeownersupport.gov on your website (NEDCO will send you the logo or banner!)
· Hang a poster or display fliers in your lobby (you guessed it…NEDCO is happy to deliver!)
Our goal is to speak directly to 5000 Marion County residents in 2 weeks – even more online and in print – and continue reaching out until every resident of Marion County knows where to turn if they’re struggling with their mortgage.
Make a Difference Day
Has your neighborhood been thinking about Make a Difference Day (Oct 27)? Did you know that $5,000 is available this year through the Statesman Journal and the Gannett Foundation? In past years many of you have partnered with HandsOn, Neighborhood Services and City Parks to clean-up parks and schools while increasing safe, community shared spaces for neighbors to gather. We have submitted an application, but are open to supporting more neighborhood park projects whether or not we get any money. Please call our office at 503-588-6207 to let us know if you would like to be involved, potentially receiving a portion of grant money for your project.
